Terms of Service
Effective Date: June 1, 2026
Using Our Services
Study GRC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Austin, Texas. We provide free GRC knowledge and community resources to the public. By using our website and community spaces, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use our services.
Who Can Use Our Services
You must be at least 13 years old to use our services. We provide our services voluntarily to all community members, and we reserve the right to restrict access where appropriate. Our Discord and other third-party platforms have their own terms — using those spaces means you agree to their rules too.
Your Responsibilities
You agree to give us accurate information on our booking forms or when contacting us. Please don’t submit sensitive personal information in community spaces unless we specifically ask.
What We Provide
Free educational resources, community forums, and events focused on Governance, Risk, and Compliance — at no cost. We use NeonOne to manage volunteer applications, event registrations, donations, membership, notifications, and mass mailing. Using NeonOne through our site means you also agree to NeonOne’s terms (opens in new tab) .
How to Behave
Our community works because people treat each other with respect. While using our services, you agree to:
- Be kind and respectful
- Not harass, discriminate against, or abuse anyone
- Not share illegal, harmful, or offensive content
- Respect intellectual property rights
- Not try to disrupt or damage our services
We reserve the right to remove anyone who breaks these rules.
Termination
We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these terms or our Code of Conduct. For community spaces, we follow the graduated process in our Code of Conduct . We may restrict access without prior notice if immediate action is needed to protect the community.
Our Content and How You Can Use It
Our educational content — text, graphics, course materials, and video recordings — is protected by copyright. Unless otherwise noted, our original educational content is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) (opens in new tab) . You’re free to share and adapt the material for non-commercial purposes, as long as you give credit, indicate changes, and share derivatives under the same license.
Our Name and Logo
You may not use the “Study GRC” name or our logos in a way that implies endorsement or affiliation without our prior written permission. You’re welcome to use our name to accurately describe or link to our services.
Your Content
By submitting content, you confirm that you own it (or have permission to share it) and that you can grant us the license below.
In Plain Language
When you post in our community, you grant us a lasting, worldwide, royalty-free, irrevocable license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, display, translate, distribute, create derivative works from, sublicense, and transfer your content as part of our educational mission and services. This means we can keep community content visible, adapt it for educational materials, and share it on platforms like PeerTube and YouTube — even if you later leave. Our goal is to keep community knowledge accessible and useful for everyone.
When you create educational materials as a volunteer speaker, author, or moderator, the same license applies. For content that becomes core curriculum, we may ask you to sign a separate contributor agreement.
License Details
When you submit content to our community (Discord, forums, events, etc.), you grant Study GRC a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, distribute, display, create derivative works from, sublicense, and transfer that content in connection with our services and mission — including promotional, archival, and educational materials.
You still own what you create. This license survives termination so content we’ve already shared doesn’t need to be removed retroactively.
To the extent permitted by law (and where waivable by law), you waive any moral rights you may have in the content, and you agree not to assert those rights against Study GRC or its licensees.
Privacy and Your Rights
Even with the license above, if your submitted content contains your personal data, you can request erasure of that personal data under applicable data protection law, as described in our Privacy Policy . The copyright license is irrevocable, but we will comply with valid requests to delete or redact personal data to the extent the law requires. This doesn’t affect our underlying copyright license in the content itself.
Third-Party Content and Fair Use
Some of our educational content includes excerpts, screenshots, or references to third-party works for commentary, criticism, teaching, scholarship, or research. We believe these are fair use under U.S. copyright law. If you think we’ve gone beyond fair use, please contact us before filing a formal DMCA notice.
Our services may link to third-party websites we don’t control. We’re not responsible for their content or accuracy.
Copyright
If you believe content on our services infringes your copyright, see our DMCA / Copyright Notice page for the takedown process, counter-notification procedure, and designated agent information. We will terminate access for repeat infringers.
Disclaimers
In Plain Language
Study GRC is run by volunteers, and our services are free. We work hard to keep everything accurate and available, but we can’t guarantee perfection or uninterrupted service. By using our free services, you understand and accept this.
Our services are provided “as-is” and “as-available,” without warranty of any kind, express or implied — including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
Educational purpose only. Everything on this site is general educational content. Nothing here is legal, accounting, compliance, or professional advice. No professional relationship is created by using our services. Always consult a qualified professional for your specific situation.
Volunteer-provided services. Our free services — including informal sessions, coffee chats, resume reviews, and career guidance — are provided as-is by community volunteers, without warranty of any kind. Volunteers may access information you submit when needed to complete their task or fulfill your request.
Community content. Content from volunteers, moderators, or community members reflects their own views, not necessarily ours. We don’t endorse or verify community advice.
Limitation of Liability
In Plain Language
Because we’re a volunteer-run nonprofit providing free services, there are legal limits on our liability. We’re not responsible for indirect damages, and our total liability is capped at $100. This limitation reflects the volunteer-run, free nature of our services.
Formal Terms
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Study GRC is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of our services. Our total aggregate liability for all claims relating to these terms or your use of our services will not exceed $100 USD.
These limits do not apply to gross negligence, willful misconduct, fraud, death or bodily injury, or statutory violations that cannot be limited by contract under applicable law — including the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act and data protection laws such as the GDPR.
Events Beyond Our Reasonable Control
We’re not liable for failures or delays caused by events beyond our reasonable control, including acts of God, war, terrorism, civil unrest, epidemics or pandemics, strikes, telecommunications or utility failures, third-party service interruptions, and government actions.
Indemnification
To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Study GRC, its volunteers, and directors from any claims, damages, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your violation of these terms or misuse of our services.
Dispute Resolution
Before filing any legal claim, contact us at contact@studygrc.org so we can try to resolve it informally. If we can’t resolve it within 30 days, either party may file a legal action in the state or federal courts of Travis County, Texas.
Our Volunteers
Our directors and officers aren’t personally liable for the debts or obligations of Study GRC, except as required by Texas law. Study GRC indemnifies its directors and officers to the fullest extent permitted by the Texas Business Organizations Code.
Under the Texas Charitable Immunity and Liability Act and the federal Volunteer Protection Act of 1997, volunteers acting in good faith within the scope of their responsibilities are generally immune from civil liability. This does not extend to willful misconduct or gross negligence.
Our volunteers, including moderators and event hosts, are not employees or agents of Study GRC and have no authority to bind the organization.
Governing Law
These terms are governed by Texas law. Any legal action must be brought in the state or federal courts of Travis County, Texas.
Nothing in these terms limits your statutory rights under applicable data protection law, including the UK GDPR and EU GDPR. Claims under EU, UK, or other data protection law may be brought in the courts of your habitual residence, place of work, or place of the alleged infringement.
Severability
If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still apply.
Entire Agreement
These terms, together with our Privacy Policy and Code of Conduct , are the full agreement between you and Study GRC for using our services. If we don’t enforce a provision right away, we still keep the right to enforce it later.
Dissolution
If Study GRC ever dissolves, our assets will be distributed for one or more 501(c)(3) exempt purposes, or to a federal, state, or local government for a public purpose, as required by law.
Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms. For material changes, we’ll give at least 30 days’ notice through our website, Discord, or email. Non-material changes include formatting, typographical corrections, and clarifications that do not affect your rights or obligations — these take effect when posted. Continuing to use our services after material changes take effect means you accept the updated terms.
